Tell us how and why you got started.

We started by making sample packs for other companies such as Loopmasters & Black Octopus Sound.

It seemed like the most logical next step was to start our own label & provide our friends with the same opportunity those companies provided us with.

What do you like most about running a label?

Our favourite part has to be getting to create tunes & samples in our studio all day. It’s also great seeing our artist payouts each month. Many of our guys who make content for us have left their day jobs to work on music full time which is amazing to us.

What challenges have you encountered so far?

The road hasn’t been too difficult as we knew the industry very well from our previous endeavours. The hardest part is creating constant content for Origin Sound as we release quite frequently.

What makes your label offering different to others?

I think our most standout quality is consistency. We are very meticulous with our sounds and won’t release something we aren’t 100% happy with.

Tell us about how you acquire talent into the label.

A lot of it is made by friends we have made over the years. We have some A&R’s that scout looking for talent on Soundcloud. Sometimes producers will reach out to us also.

What is your best selling product to date and why do you think it did so well?

It’s a tie between Future Soul & Vintage Soul. Both great packs with high quality production.

Apart from the label, what other projects are you involved in?

At the moment nothing. It takes up pretty much all of our time. Dan used to manage a few DJs and worked at OWSLA before running the label.

What format do you think is best for your customers?

Good old WAV & MIDI.

What do you think about selling project files or templates?

We think it’s a great resource for new producers, maybe we will do some in the future!

What is your opinion about subscription sites likeSplice.com andSounds.com?

We believe it gives producers a great opportunity to have more flexibility with the sounds they’d like to choose from sample packs.

What are your favorite genres at the moment, and what do you think about categorising music into genres?

We’re really into Hip Hop right now, also Lo-Fi & ambient chill out. Music needs categorisation, although sometimes ‘genres’ are a bit over the top these days.

What do you think is most important about running a label?

Quality over quantity! Assuring that every product released is quality assured, along with running a tight schedule.

What platform would you recommend to create a website / webstore?

Shopify has worked great for us.

What is the strategy: quantity or quality products?

As mentioned previously, we make sure our products are quality assured.

What do Royalty Free Samples mean to you?

Royalty free samples are a huge part of music production, they give producers free reign on releasing tracks without the need for excessive copyright clearance.

What is next for the label?

We think the main aim is to maintain releasing quality products and grow the brand further!

What do you think the future holds for our industry?

The sample pack market is quite saturated at the moment, it’s getting harder to stand out. It seems as though subscription sites are changing the way that samples are purchased, soon enough it may outweigh the traditional way of making full ‘sample packs’.
